Strengthening Yourself in the Lord

Strengthening Yourself in the Lord: Seeking God's Guidance Before Acting

As I paged through my journal this morning, I came across my reflection on the 3rd January 2019, on this verse in 1 Samuel 30: 6-8.

Context

1 Samuel 30:6-8, highlights an important spiritual principle about seeking God's guidance in times of distress and decision-making.

David and his men returned to their camp at Ziklag to find it destroyed and their families taken captive by the Amalekites. The men were deeply grieved and blamed David, even contemplating stoning him. In the midst of this chaos, David faced intense emotional pressure.

Key Lessons and Significance

1 . Finding Strength in the Lord First:

o Before David acted, he "found strength in the Lord his God." This phrase signifies a moment of deep trust, dependence, and spiritual renewal.

o Instead of reacting out of fear, anger, or self-reliance, David sought comfort and empowerment from God. This is a model for believers to turn to God as their source of strength during crises.

2. Inquiring of the Lord Before Acting:

o After strengthening himself, David turned to Abiathar the priest and asked for the ephod, a tool used in ancient Israel to discern God's will. Only then did he inquire of the Lord about the next steps.

o This reflects a critical spiritual discipline: seeking God's guidance before making major decisions. It shows humility and recognition of God's sovereignty.

3. Avoiding Rash Decisions:

o The text emphasizes the importance of not acting impulsively, even under immense pressure. David's decision to first seek God contrasts with his men’s emotional reaction of blaming and threatening violence.

o This teaches the value of patience and deliberate dependence on God's wisdom instead of relying on one's own judgment.

4. God's Response to Inquiry:

o When David sought God's guidance, he received clear direction: "Pursue them. You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue." This assures believers that God is faithful to guide those who genuinely seek Him with humility and trust.

Personal Reflection and Application

From my own life, I have experienced both scenarios: strengthening myself in the Lord before making decisions or confronting an issue, and failing to do so. Through these experiences, I have seen the wisdom in prioritizing God’s presence and guidance. When I take the time to strengthen myself in the Lord, my decisions are clearer, and my actions align more closely with His will. In contrast, neglecting this crucial step has led to devastating effects.

One key insight I’ve learned is that when we fail to strengthen ourselves in the Lord before seeking His guidance, we leave ourselves open to deception. Something may look and sound like truth, but it isn’t—especially when measured against God’s Word. Strengthening ourselves in the Lord ensures that we are spiritually grounded and discerning, helping us to navigate challenges with wisdom and faith.

Application for Today

 • Spiritual Prioritization: In times of distress, it is easy to act on emotions or logic alone, but this passage and personal experience encourage believers to pause and seek God first.

• Humility in Leadership: David’s example shows that true leadership involves depending on God rather than trying to control everything by oneself.

• Confidence in God's Direction: When we sincerely seek God’s will, we can act with confidence, knowing He will guide and sustain us.

This moment in David’s life and my own reflections are powerful reminders of how aligning our actions with God’s will leads to clarity, and peace. It teaches us to seek God not as a last resort, but as the foundation for every decision.

Sometimes prayer is not loud declarations or lengthy intercessions. Sometimes it is simply saying "yes" to God when everything in you wants to say "not yet." This post explores what it means to pray through quiet surrender — and why obedience itself can be the most powerful prayer you will ever offer.

Joy comes in the morning From June onward last year, I kept having a thought that filled my heart with joy and renewed hope—“Next year this time, I will hold our new bundle of joy.” It was more than a passing wish; it was a deep, faith-filled expectation, a glimpse of God’s promise for our family. Then, in mid-October, we received the exciting news—my daughter Josie was pregnant! We were overjoyed and amazed at how quickly it had happened. And so, the next season of prayerful waiting began—the gender reveal. I was convinced it would be a boy. In my small, human way of thinking, I assumed God wouldn’t give us another girl again. But how little I understood His ways! It was a girl! How often do we try to predict God’s plans, only to be reminded that His thoughts are higher than ours? As the months went by, however, fear tried to creep in. Again and again, I had to surrender my anxieties and declare, “Lord, I choose to trust You.” Then, in the final trimester, doctors discovered a complication that should have been noticed much earlier. The initial news was overwhelming for both the parents and me, but after consulting with a doctor friend, we were reassured. A conversation with my best friend, whose daughter had faced the same diagnosis just a year earlier, gave me even more peace and clarity. She encouraged me not to let fear cloud my faith. Instead of spreading worry, I chose to keep it in prayer and trust our Heavenly Father. And in that trust, I found total peace about Penelope’s well-being. Then, on June 6th, just a day after my birthday, our beautiful rainbow baby, Penelope, was born—perfect, whole, lacking nothing. This journey reminded me that when we ask God for something, we often expect a smooth and easy process. But faith isn’t just about receiving the promise—it’s about growing through the journey. God builds our trust, strengthens our character, and deepens our dependence on Him. It’s like a birthing experience—sometimes painful, sometimes uncertain, but ultimately, leading to something beautiful. If you’re an expecting mother or facing uncertainty in pregnancy, hold onto faith. God knows the baby He is bringing into your life, and He will equip you for every step ahead.
